I have a simple tradition: Tommy's on Christmas. I've done it two years in a row, as sad as that is, and I was going for a third.

I'm here, and it's fucking crowded! Damn Mexican families and a big as group of douchebag kids. Definitely not what I've dealt with before.

This week I've seen a couple interesting things. It started on Monday with that kid that ended up dying. Sad, but still interesting to see everyone hard at work on that kid. And even though my role was very small, I was a part of it.

The following day I had to go up to the labor and delivery OR to shoot an abdomen. They thought they left a sponge in the lady during her c-section. First time up there for me, though I almost went up there a couple months ago for the same thing, but they ended up finding the sponge. Actually, none of us really go up there, and half the people I told didn't even know how to get there. So when I was up there, I got my cassette ready, and this lady is on the table with her abdomen open. It was pretty cool. When she would breathe, I'd see her insides moving. Wouldn't have been a big deal I guess, if I wasn't a foot and a half away trying to position my things.

Yesterday I got stuck with a BE. It was a two-parter since we had to got the usual route, then through his stoma, since he had a colostomy bag. I'd done one like that before, but this was the first time I'd had to put the catheter tip into the stoma. It was kind of gross, but interesting too. It was weird seeing it and knowing I was looking at the dude's colon.

So that's how my week has gone. Today isn't over, but so far it's been a pretty routine day. That is to say nothing out of the ordinary in terms of my exams.

It sure doesn't feel like it's Christmas eve. As I've grown older holidays have felt less and less like holidays, which has certainly been amplified by being out on my own. It's probably furthered by the fact that the next couple happen to fall on days I don't work anyway, so I'm not really getting any extra days off.

Today when i got into work, I was a little curious, so I looked up the status of the kid from the er. Just like I thought, he didn't make it. And it turns out I did hear the nurse correctly.

I kind of figured that would be the outcome. He was pronounced at 5:30, and we shot the xray around 5:05 or so, but I'm pretty certain he was gone by the time we shot it.

Pretty crazy. Young kid too. As for hipaa, the laws that keep patient's information confidential, I didn't use any names, so I should be in the clear. It was just an interesting story I thought.

Yesterday at work was tough because I got to bed pretty late. I didn't fall asleep until almost 3:00, and I'm just glad I didn't drink much, because that would have made getting up that much more difficult. As for work, it was pretty slow in the morning, then around noon it picked up. I've noticed that when it's slow in the morning, it correlates to how busy it'll be later on, which sucks. I got a really late lunch, and never had a chance to make it up to the ER late in my shift, which I wasn't surprised about.

Today my day was alright. It wasn't too busy. I got stuck with a VCUG on a 15 year old kid, which was good since the kid was nervous, and I think I won over him and the parents. It went pretty smoothly. Rest of the day was just a hodge podge of regular exams, which didn't include going to surgery, or even recovery, a single time. First time in a long time I didn't have a surgery cap in my pocket by the end of the day, which was a shocker.

As for ER, my schedule overlaps a little more when I go in at 9:00, but I still didn't get any chance to head up there. That is until 5:00 when they called for a chest x-ray. Now in the ER, everything is ordered "stat", which means it's a high priority, but if it takes us a little while to get to it, it isn't too big a deal. But every once in a while they really do want something "stat", and we'll sometimes dub those "super-stat". Well this was one of those.

I went up there with another tech, and as I turned the corner, I could see a lot of activity in the room we were going to, and they were telling us to rush. I don't know if I heard the nurse right, but it was a 14 year old kid, and I think they said he hung himself. I may have misheard though. It was a tiny room, but there must have been about 10 people in it, doing chest compressions, and the whole nine yards. The doctor really wanted the chest x-ray, so he cleared the way for us. Unfortunately for me, there was blood all over the place, and I didn't have time to get gloves on, so some got on my hands. Pretty gross.

So we got the plate under, but a couple people had to stay in the room to give the kid oxygen and stuff, so they were all paranoid about being behind lead. I was really tempted to just tell them it didn't matter, and they wouldn't get much radiation, but I didn't. And another nurse took forever to stop doing compressions long enough for us to shoot. Eventually we did, and everyone gathered back around the kid to do their thing. It wasn't easy, but we got our cassette out, and pulled out the machine, then sent our images.

It was pretty crazy and hectic. Probably the most I'd seen as a student or tech. They were really working on that kid. It's amazing how much a chest can be pushed in. And I didn't really pay much attention, but I can't imagine it was going to turn out well for that kid. I was more concentrated on doing my job, and getting out of the way.

And that was my only trip to the ER today. Safe to say that I didn't make any progress with my little project. Maybe tomorrow will be a little different? At this point, I think I'm just enjoying the fact that I have a project. It's been a while.

As usual, I have plenty of nights with nothing on my plate, then one night that I have multiple things. Tonight was one of those. I technically had four things I could have done, and I managed to do two of them. The four things were going to see Ricardo's band play, the christmas party for work, another christmas party that someone from work was throwing, and going to see Tom's friend's band play.

I sort of did the latter two. I started off going to the Arcadia Elks Lodge to see Pete Corona's band play, or at least try to. I was there for about an hour and a half, got to hang out with Paul, Nilo, Nick, and Tom, as well as see three Japanese guys play Beatles cover songs, which was pretty awesome. I was having a good time, and wished I could have stayed longer, but I felt obligated to go to the other party that my co-worker was having, since i had said I'd go prior to learning of the other one. So I made my appearance, even though things were kind of winding down by the time I got there. But I said I'd go, so I went. It was fun, but Arcadia seemed like it would have been better.

Now it's 2:00 in the morning, and I have work at 7:00. Luckily I didn't drink much, so waking up should only be tough for lack of sleep, and not having to deal with the alcohol.

A little over a year ago, I sat next to a girl in orientation for work. We chatted briefly, she seemed nice, and she was cute, but our brief encounter was pretty much it. Over the course of working, I'd occasionally run into her, but our encounters were usually sporadic, and brief. Very difficult to establish any sort of rapport. I've wanted to ask her out, and as I'm building up the nerve, I can easily go a month without running into her again.

Well lately I've done my best to make an effort for rapport. I still see her sporadically, but when I do, I try to start some sort of conversation, even it's really brief. Some attempts are more successful than others. Very recently I've come to the conclusion that I do want to ask her out, and had even started to tell myself that I would the next time I ran into her.

Yesterday, I ran into her. The situation could not have been more perfect. It was slow in the ER, so she was just sort of walking around, and I was about to get a patient, but they were busy, so I had a few minutes to spare. We were in the hall with nobody around, so I didn't really have to worry about people listening to us, and I just couldn't do it. As soon as our conversation was over, I was kicking myself. I couldn't man up. The situation was just as I hoped it would be, and I still couldn't bring myself to ask.

Oh well. Here's to hoping the next time I run into her goes a little better.

Tiger Woods has been a pretty big story. Bigger than a lot of things. Bigger than, let's say, 9/11? Yup. Well, that's based on the New York Post. I just read an article saying that Tiger Woods has been on the front page of the New York Post for a record 20th consecutive day. It just eclipsed the old record, which was held by none other than the events of September 11th.

Kind of sad, isn't it? Not that it's really a definitive measuring stick, to base something off what's on the cover of that newspaper, but it is interesting to see where the priorities are. I guess it's that same set of priorities that keeps sites like TMZ, and all the other crappy gossip sites going...

Even though it's mid-week, I might as well update about my weekend. It sort of started wednesday night for nick's birthday when he decided to mix friends. Went to Dave and busters in Arcadia, had a few while hanging out with his new friends. After that we, unwisely on my part, decided to stop by Fridays in brea. Bad move. Closed that place down, and I finally fell asleep by 3:00.

Thursday I worked. Woke up not well, but I've been worse. I might have still been buzzed. At work I was okay to start off, even joking around, but around midday I went to surgery, and I took a turn. Felt like shit! I was going to leave at 3:00, then that became 2:00 so I could get my check, but by 1:30 I threw in the towel. Longest car ride ever. Got home, fed some plants before going in, and went to sleep. Woke up a couple hours later feeling a lot better. Met up at starbucks for a bit before coming home early. Ironically, ended up at my local starbucks alone because I didn't feel like sitting at home.

Friday I went to lunch with nick, Paul, and Alfred. Good times. Hadn't hung out with them in a long time. Spent 4 hours at claim jumper, before we parted ways. Later that night I met up with some co-workers in downtown Fullerton. Hadn't been there in a long time, and it was fun. Went to a couple bars including back alley and hero's, where we ended the night. Good, drunken times. Only regret for the night was driving home. Unwise. I should know better.

Saturday the weather was lousy. Stayed in all day, except to get food, which ended up being a couple things I got from the grocery store. Of course, I'm dressed like a bum, and three cute girls stand behind me at the checkout. Oh well, not like I would have done anything.

Sunday I worked, which was work. Actually overslept. Scratch that, I told people I overslept. Truth was I heard my alarm, then rolled back to sleep for the hell of it. Ended up leaving work early too. Joined the folks to get their Christmas tree. Thought about getting one too, but didn't. Later on Alfred, Paul, and nick came by. We watched tlc, followed by tlc. The wwe pay per view, then tlc specials. Good times. Called it a night around midnight.

That's pretty much how the weekend went. Social interaction. Good times.

Yesterday was hectic. For the first time on a regular day, I missed getting a lunch, which is fine because I get paid for it. The day was hectic for everyone, but from my side of it, I got stuck with a lumbar puncture. The best part of that was that the family members were pissed off, the patient had dementia, the patient needed anesthesia, and the radiologist I'd be working with was a difficult one to work with. After a great deal of confusion with the anesthesiologist, we finally got started. Luckily the rad calmed the family down, making them a nonfactor, anesthesia took care of their thing once we figured everything out, and the usually difficult radiologist was cool about everything. All in all, it turned out alright. And in the process, no lunch.

Today I came in and was sent straight to surgery. A tib/fib. It was a cool surgeon so I didn't mind. It ended up being a long case, and at one point I was relieved by a tech, but right after my break I was to go back and relieve them for lunch. So that's what I did. When it was all said and done I spent my first 4 hours of my shift with that one case, and no clue of what's going on in the department. When I get back from lunch I have a feeling I'll get stuck with one of the two arthrograms we have left. How fun...
